Friendship at Chelsea Senior Center

Cathy & Linda and Barb & Lori are just two examples of the many friendships at CSC.

Making friends isn't just something that happens when we're young. Sometimes the most meaningful connections are the ones we make later in life.

At the Chelsea Senior Center (CSC), friendships are formed over coffee, walking groups, volunteer projects, fitness classes, shared hobbies, and simple conversations. Whether you've lived in Chelsea your whole life or have just moved to the area, there's a place for you here.

Finding Friendship

When Cathy moved to Chelsea from Pittsburgh, she knew very few people. “Uprooting your life and starting over in a new town can be really hard,” Cathy explains about her move to be closer to family. She had only been in town a couple of months when a mutual acquaintance suggested she meet Linda, another former Pittsburgh resident. The two met for coffee at ZouZous, and that one conversation turned into a lasting friendship. "We've been inseparable ever since," Cathy says.

Together they've explored much of what Chelsea Senior Center has to offer. Cathy first discovered Ease the Day and became a volunteer, then introduced Linda to the program as well. They both stay involved in the community through volunteering at Mikey and Me as well as at CSC, and they continue finding new ways to stay active and connected. As well as volunteering for Ease the Day, Cathy helps out at the Ambassador desk, staffs A Brief Stop, and works with the travel committee. For Cathy, volunteering has been a great way to build connections. "It's a nice way to meet people, especially when you're from out of town," she says.

Enduring Friendship

Barb and Lori met more than 50 years ago while working together at Thompson-Shore in Dexter. What started as coworkers quickly became a lifelong friendship built on shared interests and healthy habits. They walked together during lunch breaks and worked out together after hours in the company gym.

Today, their friendship continues. Now both retired, they still make time to walk together nearly every day. When Michigan weather doesn't cooperate, they head to the Chelsea Senior Center to walk instead. For them, CSC has become another chapter in a friendship that has lasted more than five decades.

While every friendship has a different beginning, they often share the same ingredients: showing up, trying something new, and spending time with people who enjoy the same things you do.

Whether you're looking for a walking partner, someone to share a cup of coffee with, a volunteer opportunity, or simply a welcoming place to spend an afternoon, the Chelsea Senior Center offers countless ways to connect. Your next best friend might be sitting at the next table, joining the same class, or walking beside you on the hallway loop. Finding your people can happen at any age, and your next hello could become a friendship that lasts a lifetime.
