Champion Your Health: Protecting Yourself from Fraud and Scams

In recognition of Older Americans Month, the Chelsea Senior Center joins communities across the country in promoting this year’s theme, “Champion Your Health.” While physical wellness is often the focus, financial security and mental well-being are equally essential to maintaining independence as we age. Feeling confident in recognizing potential scams, protecting ourselves from fraud, and navigating today’s digital world can significantly reduce stress and empower individuals to make informed decisions that support overall health.

As part of this effort, the Chelsea Senior Center will host a free, drop-in informational session on fraud and scam prevention on Tuesday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. This session is open to community members of all ages and will focus on identifying common scams and knowing what to do if you or someone you know becomes a victim. Sponsored by Bulldog Computers, Chelsea Police Department, and Chelsea State Bank, the program will teach participants how to recognize red flags and provide practical, real-world strategies to stay safe as a key step in protecting both finances and peace of mind.

“Protecting your financial well-being is an important part of protecting your overall health,” said Jennifer Smith, Executive Director of Chelsea Senior Center. “When people feel informed, confident, and connected to trusted resources, they are better equipped to maintain their independence and peace of mind.”

In addition to educational programs, the Chelsea Senior Center offers ongoing, drop-in, hands-on support to help community members feel more confident and secure using technology. The free Technology Support Group meets every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to noon and provides one-on-one assistance with laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc. Volunteers at Chelsea Senior Center help participants access important services, troubleshoot issues, and build skills in a relaxed, supportive environment. Participants are encouraged to bring login information for any accounts they need help with, and volunteers are committed to protecting privacy and never store personal data.

The Technology Support Group supports both financial and mental well-being in practical ways. Volunteers help participants access health portals like MyChart and Michigan Medicine, manage Social Security accounts, and navigate appointment-scheduling tools. They also assist with setting up and securing social media accounts, reducing spam and unwanted emails, transferring photos to free up device storage, and learning how to safely recycle old electronics. Just as importantly, volunteers help individuals better understand how to protect personal information online, and address concerns about scams, data breaches, and password security, including setting up password managers.

“If we can’t help, we can direct you to resources that can,” says volunteer Tom Brichta, reflecting the program’s welcoming and supportive approach. No appointment is necessary. Simply sign in at the Chelsea Senior Center kiosk when you arrive.

By combining scam awareness education with ongoing technology support, the Chelsea Senior Center is helping individuals take meaningful steps to safeguard their finances, reduce stress, and stay connected. This Older Americans Month,Champion Your Health” by taking advantage of these and other free resources at Chelsea Senior Center and build the confidence to navigate today’s world safely and independently
