Champion Your Health: Blood Pressure Checks and Stroke Awareness at Chelsea Senior Center

In May, communities across the country observe Older Americans Month (OAM), established in 1963 as a time to recognize the contributions of older adults, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm a shared commitment to supporting older Americans. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as essential components of healthy aging. It encourages individuals to take an active role in their health by advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care, and making informed choices that support independence. At the Chelsea Senior Center, this message is front and center. “Taking charge of your health means making everyday decisions that nurture both your physical and mental well-being,” said Executive Director Jennifer Smith. “Simple, consistent habits, like keeping up with preventive care and staying socially engaged, can go a long way in helping individuals preserve their health and independence over time.”

As part of Older Americans Month and in recognition of both National Stroke Awareness Month and National Blood Pressure Month, the Chelsea Senior Center is offering opportunities for community members to take simple, proactive steps toward better health. Three times each month, Chelsea Senior Center offers blood pressure checks thanks to volunteers, Angie Adiska, Janice Kidd, and Jean Vargas. This month, blood pressure checks will be available in the Chelsea Senior Center lobby on May 13 from 12:30–1:30 p.m., May 15 from 10:45–11:45 a.m., and May 21 from 10:45–11:45 a.m. These screenings are an important tool in preventing stroke, as high blood pressure is a leading risk factor.

“Many strokes are preventable, and one of my goals in the community is to help people understand that knowing your numbers and making healthy choices are some of the most powerful tools we have to prevent stroke. Recognizing stroke signs and acting fast can save lives,” shares Angie Adiska, RN with Trinity Health.

Education is a key component of prevention. Angie Adiska, RN with Trinity Health, shares an easy way to remember stroke warning signs: B.E. F.A.S.T. This acronym stands for Balance loss, Eye or vision changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call 911. According to the National Stroke Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the United States experiences a stroke, but timely treatment can dramatically improve outcomes. Medications such as clot-busting drugs administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, and, in some cases, procedures to remove clots, can greatly increase the likelihood of recovery with little or no disability. The message is clear: stroke is often treatable, but only if action is taken quickly.

This Older Americans Month, the Chelsea Senior Center invites the community to take advantage of blood pressure checks and other resources available at Chelsea Senior Center and embrace the “Champion Your Health” mindset. Through accessible screenings, education, and support, individuals can take meaningful steps toward protecting their health and maintaining independence at every age.
