Champion Your Health: Staying Active, Strong, and Connected at Chelsea Senior Center

This Older Americans Month, Chelsea Senior Center (CSC) is encouraging community members to “Champion Your Health” by incorporating movement into their daily lives. Regular physical activity is one of the most important ways to support healthy aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, even a single session of moderate to vigorous physical activity can provide immediate benefits such as improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and lower blood pressure. Over time, regular exercise can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, dementia, and several types of cancer. Physical activity also supports healthy weight management, strengthens bones, improves balance and coordination to help prevent falls, and helps people maintain independence longer.

Beyond the physical benefits, staying active also supports emotional well-being and social connection. “Exercising with others can improve motivation, reduce isolation, and support mental health and resilience, all important aspects of healthy aging,” explains CSC Executive Director Jennifer Smith.

This summer, to bring the benefits of movement and social connection to the community, Chelsea Senior Center is partnering with Chelsea Area Friends for Recreation, the Chelsea Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Community Education and Recreation Collaborative to offer a free, intergenerational evening of Line Dancing at Palmer Commons. On Tuesday, June 9 from 6:00–8:00 p.m., CSC instructor Sally Shock will lead dancers of all levels through easy-to-follow steps in a relaxed and welcoming outdoor setting. “You don’t need fancy boots or perfect moves to have a great time,”  says Shock. “So, grab your comfy shoes and give it a go, You never know what hidden talents you might discover!” This free event is a fun opportunity to stay active, enjoy time outdoors, and connect with others across generations.

In addition to this special event, Chelsea Senior Center regularly offers fitness classes and activities every day of the week, with opportunities for all interests, abilities, and fitness levels. All classes are senior focused with options to move at your own fitness level. From evidence-based exercise programs to outdoor hikes and social sports, there is truly something for everyone.

Programs like Enhanced Fitness, held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and led by certified instructors focus on cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, flexibility, and balance. “Enhanced Fitness helps increase my flexibility and keeps me moving,” says CSC member Cathy Ponitz.

For those looking to improve core strength and balance, classes such as Body Core Strengthening and Improving Your Balance provide targeted exercises designed to build stability and prevent falls. Chair Yoga and Gentle Yoga offer meditative movement practices that promote flexibility, relaxation, and strength, while Tai Chi helps participants reduce stress and improve focus, coordination, and vitality through mindful movement. “I really enjoy Gentle Yoga with [instructor] Diana Kause. It helps me to relax and stretch,” shares member Chris Frayer.

Many activities combine fitness with fun and social connection. Indoor Pickleball Club at CSC brings members together for friendly competition and movement throughout the week. “Pickleball is my favorite sport because it keeps me moving. It keeps me flexible, and I get to make very, very good friends,” says member Carol Williams. Fellow member Rich Wisnosky agrees: “Pickleball is a great way to stay in shape, meet new friends, and have lots of fun.”

For those who enjoy movement with music, CSC offers several lively and engaging opportunities. Cardio Drumming combines rhythm and movement for a whole brain-and-body workout that supports cognitive, physical, social, and emotional health. Movin’ & Groovin’, led by Ballet Chelsea instructor Macks Keps, is a seated whole-body exercise class set to fun music. The newly added Body Percussion class also integrates music and seated cardio activity in an upbeat and social atmosphere. Members can also enjoy Line Dancing and Square Dancing, both of which provide exercise, coordination, and plenty of laughter and camaraderie.

CSC’s Outdoor activities offer additional ways to stay active while enjoying nature and fresh air. Happy Trails Hikes are designed for steady trekkers and feature guided 2–4 mile hikes on local trails. For those looking for a slower-paced option, Outings with Everett offers more relaxed local walks on even terrain, making outdoor activity accessible to a wider range of abilities. Members can also take advantage of walking halls at CSC, where 16 laps around the “Lobby Loop” equals one mile, providing a comfortable indoor walking option year-round.

CSC is committed to making fitness accessible for older adults. All fitness classes at CSC are senior focused with options to move at your own fitness level. CSC is also committed to keeping the cost affordable. A yearly CSC membership is $25, and scholarships are available to help if the cost is a burden. Many classes are low-cost or free thanks to partnerships like the Washtenaw Community College Senior Emeritus Program, making it easier for community members to stay active regardless of income, experience, or ability level.
